So many of us consume a lot of information without actually taking the time to make sure we understand what we just learned. It is easy to get into the addiction of acquiring so much knowledge without actually understanding it. I also understand that visualizing ideas in a book can be really hard to do sometimes. But the benefits of reading and deep learning are incalculable.
So if you are someone who struggles to understand things when you read, I will give you a few tips that can help you have a better comprehension of the books you read.
The truth is, I’ve struggled with this myself. There were many times I had to go back and revise some books that I read. Depending on what genre you are reading, some of the knowledge that we acquire can be complicated to digest. I can clearly remember when I read "Developing the Leader in You" by John Maxwell. I had to go back several times to make sure I understood the information given. So I want you to understand that you are not alone in this.
One of the best ways to really understand the books you are reading, especially if you’re a beginner reader, is to start by reading about five to ten pages every single day. Reading a few pages at a time gives you an opportunity to digest the information without confusion. Sometimes, when you read hundreds of pages, it is challenging to construct a true understanding of the information. By simply adding this habit to your routine, it will make your comprehension of each book you read a lot better.
Secondly, I recommend you take time to do a full report after each day of reading. The majority of people who read actually never take time to do a full report to make sure they have full comprehension of the information. Doing a full report also helps with your overall memory. Honestly, this is my favorite part of reading every day. I get a chance to see whether I was paying attention when I was reading or whether my mind was somewhere else. You need to understand that you are not going to be great when you start doing this. But overtime, you will get so much better.
Lastly, try to communicate with or teach someone about what you read. Why does this really matter? It’s because whenever you teach something you've learned, it reinforces your overall understanding of that particular subject or topic. One of my favorite quotes is "Learn one, teach one," and I truly abide by this. The value you place on what you have learned and the way you give it back to others is so powerful. I recommend you actually apply this in so many areas of your life and not just reading books.
My hope is that you apply the things I said above. Because these habits have elevated my love for reading and made me a better learner. Give these a try, and let me know how it goes.
